Author Guidelines

Style
Manuscripts, accompanied by a brief abstract in English and five key-words also in English, should be submitted online following the five-step submission process. Please submit texts in MS Word, Rich Text Format (RTF), or OpenOffice. PDF files are not acceptable. The text should be single-spaced, 2,5 cm margins on all sides and written in 12-point Times New Roman font. Please do not insert page numbers. Citations will conform to the author-date system, in which a list of works cited appears at the end, and citation is handled parenthetically, providing author name, year of publication, and page. For example:
(Danto, 1964, p. 86)
Deleuze and Guattari (1980, p. 15).
A reference list should appear at the end of the text headed ‘References’ and should include all and only those references cited in the text.

English submissions should be formatted according to The Harvard Manual of Style (Cite Them Right 10th edition)

Submissions should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere. Authors are personally responsible for obtaining permission and paying any required fees to use copyrighted material.
In order to ensure diversity of subject matters, approaches, and voices, we encourage authors to check whether there are significant but underrecognized papers or books by women or from other underrepresented groups, which they might have overlooked so far in producing their paper and/or assembling their reference list.

Accepted Languages
We accept submissions in either Czech, English or Slovak. For papers in English and for abstracts, follow the British English spelling and grammar rules. For example: colour, analyse, defence, behaviour, emphasize.

Note to the Authors: publishing a paper in Espes is free of any possible charges. As a general rule, priority is given to papers from authors who haven't published in Espes. The Slovak Journal of Aesthetics for at least two years prior to submission, to maintain a wide range of perspectives and approaches.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.

Research articles

Original contributions that initiate a debate, offer a point of view on current trends in aesthetics and the philosophy of art, or introduce a scholarly discussion that has not yet been available in Czech or Slovak. Contributions to this section should not normally exceed 7,500 words (excluding bibliography). An abstract in English of no more than 150 words should be included.

Survey papers

Synoptic views of recent work in a particular area of the field of aesthetics (‘state-of-the-art’ articles). Authors are invited to either provide an encyclopedia-like review of the area or take a critical stance on work in the area. Contributions to this section should not normally exceed 7,500 words (excluding bibliography). An abstract in English of no more than 150 words should be included.

Short essays and discussion pieces

Fresh and concise contributions on a specific topic in aesthetics. Often related to a thematic symposium, they are meant to be brief, with clearly stated aims and tightly controlled arguments. Contributions to this section should not exceed 3,500 words (excluding bibliography). An abstract in English of no more than 150 words should be included.

Translations

Seminal essays by foreign scholars newly translated into Slovak and essays by Slovak and Czech authors newly translated into English. The translated essays are selected based on their relevance for the development of current discourses in aesthetics. Contributions to this section should not normally exceed 7,500 words (excluding bibliography) and must be first discussed with the editors.

Interviews

Portraits of the life and work of leading figures in contemporary aesthetic debates. Contributions to this section should not exceed 3,500 words (excluding bibliography) and must be first discussed with the editors. An abstract in English of no more than 150 words should be included.

Conference reports

Detailed descriptions of recently held local or international conferences, scientific events, or scholarly summits in the field of aesthetics and the philosophy of art. Contributions to this section should not exceed 3,500 words (excluding bibliography). An abstract in English of no more than 150 words should be included.

Book reviews

Reviews of recently published volumes in relevant fields. Contributions to this section should not normally exceed 3,500 words (excluding notes and bibliography).

Artist portfolios

Curated collections of artists’ work. Serving as a visual resume, they include a brief introduction providing context about the artist; a statement of purpose articulating the artist's vision; and a collection of high-quality images or reproductions of the artist's best work. Contributions to this section should not normally exceed 3,500 words (excluding bibliography) and must be first discussed with the editors. An abstract in English of no more than 150 words should be included.

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.
